Temping interview yesterday was phone based rather than admin, and was for the Council's pest control people. Dealing with cockroaches all day would probably be a bit grim, but it's a job none the less.
Had a meeting with another agency today about a considerably nicer job working for a charity in the City of London. I'll hear whether I get an interview ~ Mid May.
I was invited to a job event at the local hospital. It turned out to be one guy handing out leaflets with their website address. Totally pointless.
Went home via Cash Converters to find out that it's turned into a church :( Where am I supposed to get cheap electrical goods now?
Off to the Sandpit this evening for gaming fun :) |

I didn't get the job I interviewed for on Friday :( There was no negative feedback, they say I gave a good interview, there was just a better candidate.
I have an interview for temping work tomorrow.. |

Got to the employment agency in time, despite spending the night in north London. It felt positive so hopefully they will come up with something :)
The Council set today as the deadline to reconfirm my single person discount for Council tax. I also went to the One Stop Shop to give them my new rent details for housing benefit. Their computer systems were down and the door closed with a person fielding the public outside. Form handed in but rent will have to wait until tomorrow *sigh*
Transport for London have said that there is no interchange between the Northern and Central Lines at Bank due to engineering work. Others have said that there is, it's just a hassle. I changed at Bank and was taken through the barriers to get to the Northern Line. This led to me being charged for two journeys not one. I managed to get the extra £2.00 refunded at Oval but be warned.
I was weak and popped into one of the charity shops on the way home - two new (to me) books - Mark Steel's Vive La Revolution (which bizarrely I saw this morning on a kitchen table) and Nancy Friday's Women On Top. Both £2 as they came from Sense, which generally has higher quality but more expensive books. |

Blatant prejudice against citrus fruit Playing the (anti)muslim card
Spent today at Work Directions as I had appointments there at 10am and 5pm. I applied for lots of jobs as there are no distractions - any web site you'd want to procrastinate on is blocked. Because of this I sent lots of text messages to twitter ;)
Bought a book in the 2nd hand book shop at E&C - Sociolinguistics by Peter Trudgill. I'm really amazed I haven't read this before. Tut tut.
I have an appointment with a recruitment pimp at 10am tomorrow morning. It's a public sector one. I've also been applying for IT qa jobs I won't get.. |

Finished my CV. I'm not sure what I'm qualified to do really. I think I'm aiming at 1st line tech support. I should stick it somewhere and ask for comments I suppose.
Monster have emailed me some jobs. I click on the email and get:

Had a productive but also a spending-too-much-money day.
The job centre meeting was fine (and actually useful). The appointment was because I have been on incapacity benefit for 3 years now. She's referred me to the Shaw Trust, and back to Southwark Works! who seem to have forgotten about me. She also tried to refer me to the Maudsley's job broker people but they are apparently impossible to get hold of! (not so good if you were, say, an employer..). She left a message but I'm not hopeful..
To celebrate something actually working the way it's supposed to I walked to Elephant and Castle and bought some purple cold dye (and sodium carbonate) at Woolies. I then walked up the Walworth Road and down East Street. I put in for my hayfever medication and spent £16 (eek) on 4 meters of lovely fabric which I intend to put on the sofa. I also did the charity shops.
One problem with shopping whilst thirsty is that your brain has "I am thirsty" in the background. This leads you do things like buy teapots. (for £2.50 from Trinity Hospice). I also found a purple suede bag in Scope and some haberdashery. Scope seem to close whenever they are either delivering stuff or have new stuff in. They closed whilst I was in the shop as they had a delivery of new goods. I find it really strange - everytime I walk past it's randomly closed.. I made a comment of "I'm amazed you're open" when I bought my stuff but she ignored me..
I need to go and post my ebay stuff as I should have done that yesterday. I also need to ring up (!) and pay for something as they don't do online payment.. (but sell on ebay..). One thing I bought but haven't paid for has arrived! Oh my - newbie seller. |

Done very little so far - just read my email, BBC News, and LJ. I've made a veg stew thing and it's simmering on the hob.
Someone posted on the_elyan's LJ last night about old names for the River Thames. I looked on Wikipedia for info and ended up reading about the traveller cant used in the US and in professional wrestling - it's called Carny. Our article needs lots but I was fascinated.
At fluffymark's party I was chatting to doseybat about college, and unemployment and not having a clue etc. She seemed surprised that a degree in Linguistics with Speech Communication can't be used for anything. I've been wondering whether she's right and that I just don't know how to sell myself. I think I need to put together a CV and show it to people (if they want). I'm guessing I'd undersell myself and they'd correct it. I still don't know what I want to do though and I'm not sure how to get to a stage where I do. I'd like mental stimulation but that's a bit vague.. |

[Jun. 8th, 2006|11:18 pm] |
My internet has been shit for the last few days - so I've not been checking stuff. The best way of getting hold of me is via text message (as normal)
I didn't manage to get to College again. I just procrastinated over washing my hair (it needed it cos of the heat) and then ended back in bed again.
I have some ansaphone messages saying that Southwark Works! have found me a work placement starting on Monday (!) at the dodgy sounding Chartered Institute of Journalists, in Surrey Docks. It sounds a bit like a "yellow union" - I wonder if it is connected to Associated Newspapers (the publisher of the Daily Mail and Evening Standard) which is also in Surrey Docks. Doing a work placement is good (a recent reference etc) - but having it thrust upon me on Monday morning less so. I suspect they've ignored the fact that I want to go into IT and got excited by the fact that I've edited Wikipedia which must make me a journalist or something (I can't write for toffee - I'm a researcher/fact checker really). I will speak to the person tomorrow to find out if it's as bad as I fear.. (it's at http://www.cioj.co.uk/ and it's clearly not the main journalists union - the NUJ - but doesn't look as bad as I imagined)
Tomorrow's bmovie features killer triffids and semi naked blonde bombshells. I'm naturally planning on going as a killer plant and have most of my half-baked costume. I'm just looking for green tights now. I know it's going to be hot but as I missed the last one..
Been playing more with Ubuntu and liking it more. The wireless is fine as long as you plug in the dongle after it's loaded. If you try and hot swap it again it doesn't connect and generally it either works or it doesn't. My other computer crashed again - I'm keeping it off until I rebuild it which means I'm missing 99% of my music.. |

[Feb. 24th, 2006|03:47 pm] |
Had lunch in Peckham with my employment advisor today. One of her other colleagues was there who knew some stuff about IT. After saying that I think networking appeals the most he suggested I go for the CCNA (Associate level Cisco qualification) - which Southwark Works discretionary fund will pay for - at a private training centre if necessary.
The course looks reasonable and useful - anyone any experience/feedback?
Also made appointment to see adult careers service on Monday.

Went to see Southwark Works! (who turned out actually to be Pecan) on Thursday as a first step in trying to get back to work. They seem to have loads of funding and have referred me to counselling (by-passing the years wait at my local GP), adult careers, will pay for me to do courses etc.
The one thing I really do need is careers advice - I left university with a linguistics degree and have done random work to support myself. I basically lack motivation when I've been working as I'm not doing stuff I enjoy.
So what to do? A piss poor internet test claimed that I'm Myers-Briggs INTJ. I've obviously got an interest/aptitude in computers and also in research.
To do research I guess I'd need post grad qualifications (which I don't have) and which I'll never get funding for with a 2.2 and a lousy credit rating.
This probably leaves IT - but what in IT? What qualifications do you need, say, to be a sysadmin? Are there any bodies funding the promotion of women in IT or women returners?
Are there any good jobs in IT? I know that most people will say "all jobs are teh suck" but you haven't tried working for local government. I need to do something and I reckon that IT will suck less than most - so how to get there? ------- I also note that whilst looking up Pecan they seem to be an evangelical christian (ie mad conservative fuck) organisation. Why do these sorts of bodies get state funding? Their equal opportunities policy is fine (as you would expect from a body receiving any sort of funding from anywhere) but then they have "basis of faith" which they take from the scary Evangelical Alliance. You can also pray for them if you wish as it is "essential to the life and growth and decision making" of the organisation. I pray that they accept evolution, rationality and the non-existance of supernatural beings. I'm not hopeful that my prayers will be answered.
